Do you think Indian B-Schools should lay emphasis on having more women students on campus?

Business Standard poses a question and solicits responses from students across India for their weekly column “ Student’s Corner”

The topic for last week was Do you think Indian B-Schools should lay emphasis on having more women students on campus?

Here are all the responses sent by IBS students:

Roughly around 30 percent of the crowd in MBA batches are women. This shows a terrible imbalance in the field of management and leaves a vacuum in the field of women supervisors. The vacuum needs to be filled in, as balanced gender mix is a healthy prospect both in terms of business and the community alike. Also, women give an altogether different perspective of a business, which gives in a new trajectory of thought which is not possible in the male dominated MBA stream. B schools should come up with scholarships for women to encourage them to take to this path of post graduation. Besides, empowering women will not only help the business, but help in the development of the country as a whole. More women role models are essential, and this can be only achieved if they are given a chance to prove themselves. Also, it is observed that women usually struggle to cope between their social and professional life, and hence might view the B school experience less favourably. An added encouragement from the B schools will help them overcome this apprehension. Hence, women empowerment is an essential duty of Indian B-schools.

— Udayan Sikdar, IBS Mumbai.

I don’t think so there is any need for special emphasis on women students. B-schools select students on their intellectual level which they show in their entrance exams. Then GD/PI, and I think only best should be selected. If we need to emphasise, then we should focus on economically weak students. There are roughly 8 per cent women top executives in the world. Why a deserving candidate should be not selected because he is a man. If the scenario was different in India, then we could say to emphasize on women students.  Other thing to emphasis is the curriculum.

— Abhinav Juneja, IBS Gurgaon.

As in India the approach of education is more theoretical and we all are aware about the fact that women are more practical in life so this will certainly boost the practical study and change the outlook of the B-Schools. And in addition women also provides the motivation especially to men to do well or at least reach to their expectations and this we can achieve with the help of this format. Though this is next to impossible as the sex ratio of women is less than that of man but the seats should be reserved in the same manner.

— Achint Mathur, IBS, Gurgaon

I don’t think Indian business schools need to lay emphasis on having more women student on their campus. Going to a B school is a personal choice of a student irrespective of gender. We are no more living in the times when women are restricted to 4 walls and expected to marry and rear kids. Most of them take their own pick and those who can’t, for them even such emphasis wouldn’t help. In a country where we are still recuperating from the ill effects of gender discrimination and reservation, we should not encourage such an act. Equality is what we all preach and aim to achieve, and so should we work towards making this real.

— Priyanka Bajaj, IBS Bangalore.

According to me, women have developed themselves and had reached a point where they are at par with men. Its good for the motivation of women education but then women are capable of achieving what they want. Education should be just and fair and whosoever deserves it should get the opportunity and not on the basis of gender. Being a women I would not like someone to see my gender over my talent and capabilities. It would be unfair to those male candidates who would have made it but could not because of more emphasis given to women on campus.

— Hetal Porwal, IBS Ahmedabad

Whether you are a man or a woman, business school can help you achieve your career goals. An MBA can open doors that you never knew existed. We need initiatives like these precisely because the level of female presentation in boards has fallen short. Also I feel ratio of men & women must be in equal proportion so that at the end it turns out to be the perfect match and we get better managers.

Typically, women operate and manage businesses in some significantly different ways than men do. Recent studies point out that while both male and female styles of leadership can be effective; ‘female’ frequently has the edge. In order to get more of Chanda Kochhar, Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and established women like them, the stepping stone would be imparting education and knowledge to more number of women at B schools.

— Ankita Arora, IBS Mumbai

Women the more you try to understand them the more you think! Why did I even tried?. I did my MBA in 09-11 from ICFAI Gurgaon. During my two years I learned quite many things be it working in a team , late nights assignments and many other. I noticed one important thing the confidence girls had these days. I am sorry to say but we should take a leaf out of there book. I think women are more emotionally intelligent and are better in managing people . They have different sets of ideologies and their understanding is different which makes it interesting working with them .Last but not the least being a guy myself “Who doesn’t want to have more girls in college and I think every guy would vouch for me .

— Kshitij Khandelwal, IBS Gurgaon

An MBA is extremely versatile and will be valuable in no matter what industry you decide to enter. Also, the proportion of women with paid jobs can give a massive boost to the economy and have changed women’s lifestyle and thinking. Companies are now hiring women is about quality and pluralism – to show that not one way only is the right way to do business. However, as many women are leaving jobs in their 30s when their career is about to take off to start a family and not return to their job.

— Vivek Gujral, IBS Mumbai.

The topic of discussion is disheartening to a certain extent. Why are women still considered as the weaker gender despite world over examples of women entrepreneurs giving an exquisite contribution in their work field? B-school curriculum is not designed in a way that any emphasis needs to be laid on any division of society be it social or gender. If any emphasis is required it’s in the area of reduction in the cost of the course. Bringing the gender issue would give space to unnecessary discomfort and hatred among the men against women and hence negating the possibility of effective team work which forms the backbone of any institution. Moreover, as a women I would never like to dilute my share of success with a guilt and obligation of being ’emphasised on’.

— Rhiva Singh, IBS Gurgaon.

The prime motive of b-schools is to make business leaders of tomorrow. Keeping that in mind we need to broaden our horizons and enhance management education. It is still believed that women are not interested in entering this profession. Even the best of b-schools in the country have average class strength of only 12-15 percent women. Imparting managerial skills is very important and cannot be ignored. Not having a good male-female ratio will result in restriction of exchange of ideas and also result in limiting their thinking perception. So the Indian b-schools should lay emphasis on having more women students on campus.

— Sonnelpreet Singh Chawla, IBS Mumbai

Diversity is a factor of great value and women in Indian B-schools can be seen as the same effort towards having a diversity of intellectualism. It will not only improve the percentage of women students in higher education but will also help B-schools in developing students which can be different from each other and yet be very influential. But it should be kept in mind that nobody can be forced to study and thus getting seats reserved for women will not be of great help. The aptitude tests should be such which allow measurement of skills along with knowledge.

— Neha Singh, IBS Gurgaon.

Business world demands skills which are indifferent to the sex of the involved brain. In current scenario Women also play a significant role in decision making and many other important areas. Hence, B-schools must open-up their arms and welcome each and every part of the society which is possessing such qualities, irrespective of their sex. Equal opportunities must be provided which could help to select the best person.

— Sandeep Guleria, IBS Gurgaon

Indian B-schools should lay emphasis on having more women students on campus for– rapid economic growth of Indian economy; increase female labour force participation rates and having similar set of talent and attributes as men. Women possess over fifty percent of India’s population and even close to half of Indian Corporate managers. Women hold a prominent position in Indian corporate world and society. However, since the prehistoric times women were denied opportunities and have to suffer for gender ideology. But now, times have changed women are at par with men in all kind of tasks like reaching the moon, conquering Mount. Everest and participating in all fields.

— Husain Rupawala, IBS Mumbai.

India is a developing at fast pace in this global economy. A high demand for talent and a need to look beyond has prompted Indian companies to encourage women at managerial positions. Thus with intention of creating more global & Indian women business leaders & move away from stereotype business schools need to give emphasis more on women. As from over the years admission of girls in IIM’s have increased across its now time for other B-schools to follow the suit and give equal opportunity to girls. Its time to see more Indra Nooyi & Chanda Kochhar in coming years.

— Vikas Barbhaya, IBS Mumbai

In India where profit is the only business of business, very few women are applying for b-schools. Women are required at managerial level because they have more pragmatic approach towards life, they’ve more stronger ethics and they are more expressive. Leadership study says that women are better managers. B-schools should encourage balanced gender representation else it will restrict exchanges of different ideas during classroom sessions which will ultimately going to affect workplace and production. The aim of b-school is not to act like placement agency but to inculcate managerial ethics to produce better managers for tomorrow. The number of women entrepreneurs is growing from meager of 2% in 1971 to 11% till now where women like Chanda Kochhar, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Dr. Swati Parimal and many others have paved their way to success. Moreover it shouldn’t be only viewed as urban perspective but b-schools should start taking initiatives to reach out to rural working women to make them realize their qualities and enhance their skills. Finally for driving more and more female students to b-schools, there should be force of motivation, change in family attitude and winds of change within can only transform them into better managers.

— Abhishek Devendra Fanse, IBS, Hyderabad.

“In a country where against 100 men enrolled only 14 women were pursuing higher education during 1950-51, the number had risen considerably to 66 by 2001-2002, emphasis should be laid on stressing the importance of management studies to women and the society at large. A greater number of women choose courses which ensure secure government jobs (as also desired by their families). Laying an emphasis on having more women in B-school campuses mustn’t mean having separate quota for women, but having women who are aware that they possess the essential qualities that a B-school and a management course demands. As Burns rightly pointed out : once leadership comes properly to be seen as a process of leaders engaging and mobilizing the human needs of followers, women will be more readily recognized as leaders.”

— Sonali Sarkar, IBS Bangalore.

B-schools’ class rooms and companies’ board rooms have traditionally been male-dominated. The average women ratio in a batch stands between 12-15% in Indian b-schools. Gender wise unbalanced workforce is the story of most of the organisations in our country, as there are not enough women in B-schools to select from. In order to create more balanced class rooms and workplaces, B-schools should emphasise on increasing the ratio of women enrolments by providing merit scholarships to women so that the deserving ones who don’t apply for B-schools for not being able to afford the big bucks as fees, so that they can also enroll for management studies. More flexible time table can be introduced so they can manage their family and studies. The admission policies and criteria should be more conducive to their overall skills.

— Madhur Madaan, IBS Mumbai.

According to me women are most prominent features that leads any organization to grow business. They play in an open out role in b schools each lady predicts different ideas as Kochhar, CEO and MD of ICICI Bank.

Sparkles of Textese in Marketing

Now what is this “Textese”?!!

It is also known as txt-speak, txtese, chatspeak, txt, txtspk, txtk, txto, texting language, txt lingo, SMSish, txtslang,or txt talk.

‘Textese’ is also commonly known as the Gen Y language. We are the inventors and the sellers. To write a huge paragraph in a small line is something worth appreciating. ‘Textese’ has become an integral part of our communicating. It not only makes a gruesome conversation more fun but revealing too! That is what the marketing motto is. “Revealing, sellable, attractive and catchable”. To sell a product or to establish a business the first step to the customer or establishment in the market is through the human senses and to do so if the same mode of communication is amplified then that becomes more convenient.

Therefore the “AD” world is using it to make it more catchy, cost and space saving. For example, an advertisement of a book uses the SMS language: EAT RIGHT 4 YOUR TYPE.

Companies believe that to speak the language of your customer is the easiest way to capture the market. Unilever’s advertisement for their novel range of deodorant for teenage girls uses the phrase “OMG!  Moments. “David Lang, president of the team who created the advertisement commented that they desired to bring across the impression that they identify with youth culture and discourse.

Many other companies like McDonald’s have also attempted to pursue the teenage market by using SMS language abbreviations in their commercials. McDonald’s in Korea has an online video commercial which concludes with: “r u ready?”

Remember: “You can have brilliant ideas, but if you cannot get them across, your ideas will not get you anywhere”-Lee Iacocca

Are you ready to become a manager?

Now that the selection process and admission formalities are complete the path to MBA is almost clear. The aim of this post is to inform the latest batch of students regarding things they can expect from an MBA college and degree.

Mental preparation before a master’s degree is of utmost importance. This comprises of your personal goals/objectives as well as expectations from an MBA course. It is vital that a student is in the right frame of mind and well prepared before joining the course as MBA is known to be a grueling endeavour. However the reputation that precedes the course is mainly due to the sudden barrage of information and umpteen options available. If a student is mentally prepared regarding his own goals and what he expects from the course, these two hectic years could turn out to be a very pleasant affair.

Before starting the course it is advisable that every student maps out his objectives from the course and makes an action plan clearly stating where he sees himself after completing MBA, as well as 5 years down the line. An action plan like this will help guide a student during tough decisions like which specialization to choose and which companies to apply for during placements. This action plan need not be a detailed 50 page document, it can be as concise or elaborate as you see fit. The rationale for this exercise is that students are ill prepared while joining an MBA.

Preparation for entrance exams requires brushing up on various techniques and topics, whereas preparation for the MBA course deals with being aware of your needs and expectations from the course and those expectations being translated to your daily activities. Once the course is in full swing there is hardly any time to prioritize your activities or contemplate on any issue. Though the word ‘pressure’ is used freely, if a student is clear about his course of action he will not be burdened by this pressure.

Start by listing out your skills, hobbies, interests etc and how these can be transformed into a career. Focus is something that is lacking amongst the students and a few early steps can be very helpful in guiding your future decisions. Once you have listed down your personal interests and desires, map it against the course and see how you can avail maximum benefit from your course/college. In terms of resources and infrastructure there will never be a scarcity during MBA, however unless a student is clear about what he wants these resources will be underutilized. So take some time out for yourself and understand the implications of being a manager in two years time.

In terms of essentials that you will need for your hostel rooms, everything will be available on campus in IBS Hyderabad. Starting from mattresses, toiletries, curtains to snacks and beverages you will find everything on campus. So make good use of the time left before the course starts and good luck on your journey to becoming successful managers of the future!

Dincharya Technologies:

Friends, I think you will all agree that nowadays technology has become part of each and everything we do. Sometimes it becomes mandatory but often it is not, and there comes an opportunity to tap in. We should make an effort to include the required applications in our work to simplify it even if it’s not mandatory and finish it with the extra spark needed. For e.g.: MS Excel is used for calculations of array of data. It can be done by calculators like many retail shops still follow but MS Excel facilitates it. Photos will be photos with unlimited memories attached but if it is served with special effects, it will be like the icing on the cake. To remain ahead of your peers and make a mark for yourself you should start today itself to learn these techniques. I would like to name few of them which can help you in your journey ahead in IBS:

  • Microsoft Office Suit (MS EXCEL, MS-Word, Ms-PowerPoint)
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Google Online Applications (Google docs, Google Survey Maker, Google Spreadsheet etc)

You will come across these on a daily basis so do acquaint yourself with these. These instruments make your work look big and organized. Not only used in professional or study related activities it can help you in your personal life as well. Starting from class participation, becoming famous among your friends as well as peers to impress a boy/girl, it has all the merits attached to it. So why not associate yourself to these merits! I think it is like Vodafone dog that goes with you wherever you go and helps you in every possible way. Let’s start learning from the place we lag and blossom in every endeavor we make because
“Lag is not a lack but to remain complacent is”.

P.S. I request my readers to reply here with other such technologies which are helpful and serve as a friend in need as well as deed.

Hard Work Pays but It Must Be Made Visible Too

As a student of MBA, this is my first blog though I write for our club’s monthly magazine-Focus.

MBA-Master in Business Administration. If Business is plucked out from MBA then also it is quite meaningful or I can say the remaining is the most important ingredient to be in any manager and a leader. You need to administer others.  Here in our college where to learn your MBA program you come across people, who all inspire like you to be a future manager and /or a leader. In their pursuit of their dream which is common to yours, everyone tries to lead others. These so called “Others” are themselves trying hard to lead you. Chaos can prevail if it’s done without using your left brain which works and thinks logically. Then what will be your tactics to tame them (not literally but to emerge as a leader in this jungle fight); if not to work under you then at least to work along with you in your ideas?

Here in IBS, college provides us with an environment consisting of CLUBS which gives you a platform to learn the skills needed to master the above mentioned problem. There can be many answers. If I would conduct a survey in my college where there are more or less 2000 students, I can come up with lots of solutions .These remedies can either be used singly or can be clubbed together to form as tactics to seek modus Vivendi.

Ok, I think for readers’ convenience I should once give you all a glimpse of Clubs in my college which I had witnessed. There are as many as 28 clubs in my college focused towards particular area like Economics& Business, Marketing, Advertising, Entrepreneurship, Sports, Art and culture and Nature etc. Basically these can be divided into formal and informal subject related clubs (Of course none of the clubs can be said as informal if its subject line is informal. But students do say  J ).Clubs in first category organizes formal events, business fights, Lecture guest, and discussions. Other organizes cultural events, Sports events, Cultural competition, Rock music shows, fashion shows and much more.

Every club has its core committee and an executive committee. When first year students join they work as working members after they pass through specific club’s recruitment and selection process. The timeframe of one as a working member till he/she becomes a core member, executive member or  remains left out in the race is very crucial for one’s success in this small blueprint of corporate world. This is the time when you have to showcase your talent in specific areas and more importantly to emerge as a leader among your peers. During this period of your education along with theoretical knowledge one gets acquainted with practicality of it.

In the first blog I’m sharing just one of my learning which is very important in today’s corporate scenario wherein flat hierarchy or companies with very few hierarchies are becoming common. It looks as though organizations with bureaucratic hierarchy too will soon follow the trend due to its advantages. But it has demerits too. A cure for it could be my learning. Therefore I thought to share with you all.

“HARD WORK PAYS BUT IT MUST BE MADE VISIBLE TOO”.

Trust me it’s very important. Person like me born and brought up in a lower middle class family with father as a government employee, values and morals imbibed in me had a tough time to showcase my talent in my endeavor. Your work will be tagged as someone else’s work and you will not know when this hell happened. This was not because I was weak but I couldn’t do Chaplusis (I think you know this. It’s called as Flattery), politics-here politics is not taken in its literal way but the way we Indians take it (in colloquial term) and more importantly to bespeak my views in front of everyone (here I mean seniors because they are the one judging you) and make everyone aware about your contribution if you were keeping track of it and were working on it. So who all believe in “Hard work” or at least in “Smart work” then you should make it visible and take credits for it. You have to judge the right time to take credit or else it may hamper your image as well as your team work which is not at all good. So beware!!

Of course all this is just a simple simulation of a real organization where we all have to land up one day. Only exception is to get self-employed and I think proportion of students is very minimal for such employment. So peers follow your heart to choose a work, a work you love because if you sow hard work in your love, you can reap its benefits. It’s been said correctly-“Work is love made visible”, a work what you love to do will be visible one day or the other. But time is the constraint. As in love you have to show your love or at least give cues like that initially you have to make your work visible voluntarily and then if you love to do that job, it will shine forever.

Summer Internship in Business Schools

summer_internship_id_card

Summer Internship is an important and a very crucial element of
management studies because it helps the students to identify what skills and attitude are required to be generated/developed to successfully survive in the corporate world and have a competitive edge over the others.

After the completion of the internship, students have approximately 10-12 months of time to develop on the same and re-enter into the corporate world with a better professional understanding. Business schools on an average have THREE months of time available for internship. Therefore entire THREE months should be utilized for better and clearer understanding. More the time available, better is the learning and outcomes.

Mba Post Work Experience

It was a tough decision to do an MBA after having over 2 years of work experience. Two things came into my mind, will I be able to study after such a long time and secondly I have to again be dependent on my parents (financially). But being a graduate doesn’t help you to grow especially in such a competitive environment. But I knew that once my MBA gets completed I will grow at a faster pace compared to being a graduate. After a huge round of thoughts and talks, I finally decided to do an MBA.

After clearing the IBSAT exam, I made a decision to get into IBS Bangalore. Lectures started and knowledge was flowing from all the directions (thanks to such a wonderful faculty and colleagues). To my surprise, by using only my work experience and knowledge gained from lecturers I was able to score 8/10 GPA in my first semester. Second Semester looks to have also gone the same way (expecting better results than the earlier). I would like to suggest all those people having work experience not to hesitate in joining a business school. You will definitely get better grades and would also add as an advantage during placements. Moreover, it also gives you a platform to develop yourself (this is the place where mistakes are accepted) and re-enter into the corporate world with a better understanding and attitude. Good luck!!!!!!!

Customerization

“The Customer is always right”

The Market is a sole worshiper of the (GOD) Customer. The trend, demand, supply, depletion, profitability of a company or the sway of the market completely depends or is solely shouldered by a customer’s mindset.

Therefore from launching of a minute pin to the recent launch of Agni-V everything is test run to forecast the future of the item.If it earns applauses it is introduced or else gets vanished.

Hence Customerization is taken up by companies as a marketing tool to retain the customers in a competitive market.

“Designing a product according to the customers’/individual’s requirement” is called customerization. Though the whole concept needs a lot of sweat but the only boost for this is customer’s satisfaction. “Idea is yours but product is from customers end”.

This concept or strategy of customerization can even be found in the fruit juice seller’s counter where he allows his customer to have the combination of his own choice, example: X-needs Apple +Orange whereas Y-needs Pineapple +Grapes…

By this above strategy the company has got a boost in their sales. It is an effective tool to measure the customer’s preference and value. No need to know the personal information of the customer just good feature of your product + good website would raise you to the ladder of success.

The Efficient Management Reporting System

Management reports remains in limelight due to the transparency factor and because of current market situation. Due to recent failure in the corporate and requirement of transparency in information sharing, management reporting is an important need of hour due to following factors:

1. Precision to meet market authorities and regulators
2. Competence for organisation staff to meet the demands of the market and customers.

To meet shareholder claim for better speed and transparency, businesses need to execute more effective ways of communication. This is particularly crucial for financial information reporting where and figures have to be evidently presented and explanations universally shared to constrain out guesswork. This will result in reliable and transparent information. There are significant number of ways to create an efficient management reports which will be more effective in terms of transparency and meeting current market demands and requirement.

In this blog we will discuss few methods of efficient management reportings, but before discussing the methods we should always know the presumptions for a tried, tested and efficient reporting process

1. The recent collapse in corporate world has enlightened the need for precision and call for change in the way companies report to investors and financial markets. Market regulators and local authorities also require more timely information, more inclusive information.

2. In the recent time businesses are moving at an ever more faster pace a fact which is not lost upon the financial markets, which are stridently demanding business reporting to stand up to the mark. Corporates face regular challenges in broadcasting of financial information both internally and externally, investors, local authorities and stock exchanges. It is clear that swiftness is of fundamental nature and loss of precision is an increasing evident risk.

Electronic information serves as a fast, efficient and cheap method to reach audiences globally, when dealing with business reporting data, searching the Internet for information particularly for time receptive corporate disclosures which has become a natural prospect.

To do this top management of the company will have to find new improved tools to attain the related objectives of providing both trusted and efficient reporting to their audience.

There are two primary aspects essential to these calls for more revelation first, the critical data needed by investors, analysts and regulators is substantially the same as that used by managers to make both strategic and operating decisions; and second, the technology used to generate in depth information channels within companies is the same one used to generate corporate communications to the public via the Internet. Financial market participants are already clamouring for companies to provide a broader spectrum of information.

Value Addition

The structured reporting system do add value to the overall system in different manner

1. By Meeting the needs of the user it ensures that by providing support for the requirements of business users of the project solution.
2. To generate effortless use of reporting that are simple to use, easy to learn and contain standard tool for performing in depth ad hoc analysis and it can segregate accountability and Insight reporting
3. Liability reporting is primary planned to help management better measure performance against target, whereas, insight reporting is focused on providing information to help management better understand the business and react tactically and strategically.

The extent of reporting varies from client to client depending on needs, which can include preparation of high level management reports on a spreadsheet which entirely focus on evaluating implementation of corporate strategy to large scale implementation of specialized reporting applications.

Following can be, three typical examples of management reporting projects:

1. Strategic Reporting
2. Fast close project
3. Management Information System (MIS
)

Strategic Reporting provides an insight about the development of corporate strategy implementation on a regular basis. The project phases are analysis of current corporate strategy, preparation of documentation containing strategic goals and drivers, identification and definition of key performance indicators, measuring strategic goals and drivers, design of reporting process ensuring regular information preparation and preparation of pilot reports for management.

Fast close project reporting is to shorten the closing and reporting cycle. Typical project phases are analysis of current closing and reporting process, identification of blockages and automation opportunities, support during regular monthly closure process and implementation of relevant tools like estimates and adjustments.

Management Information System augments efficiency of management report preparation and sharing. Projects in MIS implementation consist of identification of management information needs, definition of MIS data model, selection of MIS platform, preparation of Business blueprint describing in detail calculation of key performance indicators from source data, implementation of MIS database and extract, transform and load routines and rolling out of management reports or building a comprehensive management portal.

Key Benefits:

1. Augmented effectiveness of the reporting preparation and distribution process.
2. Acceptable, definite and informative key performance indicators and reports.
3. Condense delivery time for management reporting and reduction in cost.
4. Enhanced decision support system with faster and more relevant management information.
5. Improved logical capabilities and performance management support.

MBA and the Corporate Veil

By Abishek A Ganesh. Abhishek is an alumnus, class of 2012 (IBS Hyderabad). He has just started with his first job. Abhishek is also a budding musician and was part of Diatribe, band at IBS Hyderabad.

About two years ago when I was busy writing entrance exams and applying to various management schools I never took out the time to notice what I was getting into. After successfully completing two years in a reputed institute, I received my degree in Marketing Management. Before I joined IBS I didn’t have a clear idea about what management or marketing actually entailed and now I have a piece of paper which corroborates that I am a “master” in business administration!

Well as far as I’m concerned Management is more of an art than a skill. Management is bound by regulations but is ever evolving and demands its practitioners to behave the same way. People might be christened as great managers but their style can’t be imitated by anybody else. A person’s management style is contingent with respect to the situation and people he/she is dealing with. It will be unique for each subsequent action and hence the learning is not straight forward. When I mentioned that management is more of an art than a skill, the point I’m trying to elucidate is that it can’t be learn only practiced. Learning is applicable when it comes to the limitless research done on various topics previously, for example “the theory of reasoned action” a model which tries to explain attitudes, is something that was proven by empirical studies in 1975. Now learning this model is a luxury we have as opposed to anyone who died before 1975! Our collective knowledge is something that we have to learn from so we don’t waste time validating something that is accepted. Other than this there is only practice in management.

Now let me clarify about the title of this article and the veil in question. Before I joined IBS my understanding of the corporate was shallow to say the least. I knew that companies existed; I knew they made products and provided services but my preference for any of these companies was not guided by anything concrete. I always thought that corporations were just money grubbing organizations which used media extensively to deceive the mass audience into believing them. I used to try new products in case I found the advertisement really appealing but that was always restricted to the first purchase. After evaluating a product post-usage my preference was based mainly on satisfaction and financial constraints and the corporate world ended there for me.

However after going through a rigorous course and completing it my understanding of the ‘corporate’ has changed significantly. I notice myself staring at advertisements and billboards trying to decipher the strategy used by the company in question, I notice the way the retail store keeper arranges the toffees and chips of different companies, I notice how one newspaper differs so vastly from another in terms of layout, content and readers etc,. The veil has finally been lifted. These organizations are nothing if the people working for them are removed from the equation. Just like humans in the way we address our myriad needs and wants, the corporate being tries to deal with competitors, customers, regulators etc to survive in the corporate jungle. All of these actions however are decisions made by people based on the information available to them and their self-developed insights.

The corporate is not a mysterious entity that lurks in the background and controls our world; it’s a system that we have created as a society. This system may have innumerable faults but as a system created to enrich lives mutually, it’s the best one we have yet.
